Oddly enough, I think that was the first time Manly were truly beaten by a better team this year. And yet they still could have won it in the second half if their attack had any direction- they badly missed Foran's organisation and kicking game. Watmough and Williams need rockets, while Farrar needs to start catching the high ball. Bailey was useless at five-eighth and should be there for depth in the forwards/centres and nothing else.

I think he should be picked despite the Tigers form slump. I think at the start of the year he showed he still has it.

The Blues team looks like this,

1. Kurt Gidley (c), 2. Brett Morris, 3. Matt Cooper, 4. Timana Tahu, 5. Jarryd Hayne, 6. Jamie Lyon, 7. Brett Kimmorley, 8. Michael Weyman, 9. Michael Ennis, 10. Josh Perry, 11. Trent Waterhouse, 12. Ben Creagh, 13. Anthony Watmough
Interchange: 14. Jamal Idris, 15. Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, 16. Luke Lewis, 17. Brett White

I've had so much trouble picking a Queensland team this year. Particularly the backline. I keep leaving players out that I think deserve to be there. I'm no fan of Darius Boyd, but there's no way he deserves to be dropped. I think Slater, Boyd, Inglis, Tonga and Falou all need to be there, but I also desperately want to find space for Tuqiri. Someone very deserving is going to miss out. I don't think there's room on the bench for another centre/winger.

hhhmmmm seems kinda weird that the old NRL thread seems to be the ONLY thread "lost"........ :-\ :-\

QUEENSLAND have named their team the State of Origin rugby league series opening clash with NSW in Sydney next Wednesday.

The team is:
Billy Slater,
Darius Boyd,
Greg Inglis,
Willie Tonga,
Israel Folau,
Darren Lockyer (c),
Johnathan Thurston,
Matt Scott,
Cameron Smith,
Petero Civoniceva,
Nate Myles,
Sam Thaiday,
Ashley Harrison.

Interchange:
Cooper Cronk,
David Shillington,
Neville Costigan,
David Taylor.

(18th man: Ben Te'o).

Harrison is a great selection. He was there last year so no reason why he shouldnt be this year. Plus his form for the ever improving Titans has been top of the tree stuff. That was a no-brainer he'd get a spot. Apart from no Tate, Tuqiri & Price (they can't all fit in, injuries aside) that is one of the strongest Qld teams I've seen named in quite a while. No wonder we dominate, we have quality from #1 - #18. Awesome news to see Cooper Cronk get that utility role that used to suit Berrigan...

He's been one of Queensland's best every game for the past few series. He's not a flashy player, but the Maroons would miss him like crazy if he wasn't there. I'd be spewing if Harrison wasn't picked.

The only thing I'm not sure about this year's Queensland side is Matt Ballin being named as Cam Smith's standby ahead of Nathan Friend. It probably won't matter as I reckon Smith will play, but Friend would be a priceless asset to the Maroons.

MFKN @ the original thread.

Quote
Referees: Tony Archer and Shayne Hayne
Sideline Officials: Paul Holland and David Abood
Video Referee: Bill Harrigan and Paul Simpkins
Stand-by Referee: Jared Maxwell
Stand-by Sideline Official: Jeff Younis

As for the QLD team, I like it. LOL @ Folau being there tho. Someone asked me on the weekend what he'd do and I said he's not gonna decide till post Origin. Cant see that changing anytime soon.

Its definitely one of those Blues sides that if they don't perform and win this first game, then there will be some huge criticism thrown at the selectors and a lot of explaining will be needed.

The pressure is on the Blues big time, if it wasn't already.

I still dont get why Ennis would need to be replaced? Surely they could have just played Hayne in #1, Tahu to the wing, Idris in the Centres (or vice versa) & Gidley off the bench in that case? Or does that make too much sense?

if ur a nsw selector then yes it makes too much sence........until they actually start picking players to play in their proper positions that they play week in week out with their club then they're gonna be hard up to win imo....

trent barrett and brett finch have been brought in just in case Tahu isnt able to play - they need TWO guys in case ONE cant play ??? tahu is worth 2 men :)

I recon you have just summed up why the NSW blues are total rubbish.

_______

I am really pumped for the friday night game but just realised that alot of the players I wanted to see (gidley) won't be in the side due to origin!!!!!

How many players are missing from the tigers, Knights and Dragons. Might be a good idea looking at Canberra for the upset.

Let's just wait and see how the first game goes before we label any team, "rubbish" :P I have a feeling this NSW team has a decent chance.

Manly centre Steve Matai will miss three NRL matches for his two high tackles in Monday night's loss to Parramatta.

Matai entered early guilty pleas on Wednesday to the grade five and grade one careless high tackle charges laid against him.

The Kiwi centre copped the grade five charge for an ugly first-half shot on Eels debutant Tom Humble.

The grade one sanction related to a second-half tackle on Test star Jarryd Hayne.
Matai has a poor disciplinary record, causing former judiciary panellist and Kiwi international Darrell Williams to warn him he needs to change his aggressive tackling

After seeing the Queensland boys train on the Sunny Coast this afternoon I'm really not expecting Cam Smith to play next week. His elbow still looked very tender when they were strapping it.
