Rock The Casbah
« on: January 05, 2011, 01:01:15 PM »

Any fans of The Clash in here?

Got a copy of Rock The Casbah? Theres something about the version I have from 'The Essential Clash' double set thats driving me insane.

In the third verse during the lines 'the in crowd say its cool, to dig this chanting thing, but as the wind changed direction, the temple bad took five' theres a sound that seems out of place. It sounds like an old mobile phone playing 'Dixie'.

Does anyone else have this on their versions? Does anyone know why its there? Is it in the original recording or is it a corruption of a remaster or something?

Seriously, its driving me mental.

original recording
You may be mad, but not for this reason...
It's an error in the original recording.
You really only pick it up on headphones.
It's been remasted since, I'm sure.
Still, very funny stuff.

I class myself as a fan, but do find some of The Clash's stuff hit & miss
Great include tracks:
Rock The Casbah
Train In Vain
Magnificent Seven
This Is The Radio Clash
Should I Stay Or Should I Go

Oh thank christ for that. I thought I was losing it.

Ive never really been a fan of The Clash, just their big singles I guess. Lately Ive been appreciating their reggae/dub influenced stuff particularly 'Guns of Brixton' and 'Straight to hell'.

Call me crazy, but I always kind of preferred The Specials to The Clash.

I guess I'm more influenced by the ska sound, although I do think the Clash were the best UK punk band. I've always been a bigger fan of the West Coast punk sound than the English punk sound.

The above post has heat with HHH.

I dig The Clash, "Career Opportunities" is such a great song, though I prefer The Damned personally.
But Black Dynamite! I sell drugs to the community!

Being a Soul Child/Hip Hop Baby, those names ring no bells at all.

I'll have to give them a go.

Ok, turns out I lied. I do know who Madness are, I knew their songs just not the name of the band.

I've tried Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Joy Division and a few others memtioned here its really not my cup of Kool Aid.

Considering my Ipods 25 Most Played Playlist features Arrested Development, The Game, Kool and The Gang, Earth Wind and Fire and Mark Ronson - The Clash is far enough out of my confort zone for the moment. Baby steps, baby steps.

The Dead Kennedy's were great, saw them live in the early eighties great night, guaranteed fights between the Surfies and Punks lol. Who could forget Jello Biaffra back in the day.
Some classic songs from the DK's
'Nazi Punks F*ck Off'
'Too Drunk to F*ck'
'Holiday in Cambodia'
Calafornia Uber Alles' (their first single in 1979)

I like their cover of "I fought the Law" regarding Dan White's assassination of Harvey Milk and the San Francisco Mayor (I feel awful that I don't know his name as well, but he didn't have a major motion picture starring Sean Penn made about him).

My favourite band punk band that started in the 80s is probably NoFX purely by virtue of the fact that they were about the first punk band (real punk, I was aware of Blink182 prior to NoFX) I was ever introduced to. The fact that they're still kicking around today is the most amazing thing of all. I still regret not seeing when I had the chance to when they toured with Bad Religion and the No Sleep 'Til... festival in the last couple of years.

George Muscone The songs  lyrics-

Drinkin' beer in the hot sun
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won

I needed sex and I got mine
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won

The law don't mean Sh*t if you've got the right friends
That's how the country's run
Twinkies are the best friend I've ever had
I fought the law And I won
I fought the law and I won

I blew George & Harvey's brains out with my six-gun
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won

Gonna write my book and make a million
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won

I'm the new folk hero of the Ku Klux Klan
My cop friends think that's fine
You can get away with murder if you've got a badge
I fought the law And I won
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won
I am the law
So I won, ungh!

Was gonna give you a hard time about calling Nick Cave an 80's band but you are right I was thinking he was still in Birthday Party then but that ended in 84 with 2 members going on to the Bad Seeds outfit.

Mind you The Clash, UK Subs, The Damned, and The Buzzc*cks were all from the 70's.

If you want some 80's punk check out some Sham 69 too or even some Crass or Generation X. But if you wanna try something a little different try some psychobilly like The Meteors or Guana Bats or even The Cramps.

The Cramps
I'm ashamed for forgetting them.
Been getting into them the last couple of years.
Sooo bad they are complete gold.
They are deluxe.
The lead singer RIP was named Lux Interior (how cool is that name?)

Trashy schlock horror punk tracks like:
Garbage Man
The creature from the black leather lagoon
Good Taste (yummy yummy, you got good taste...)
Drug Train

Amazing covers of classics
Surfin' Bird
Route 66 (Get Your Kicks On)
Lonesome Town
Fever

Perfect for long drives or a quick trip to the beach with the windows down.
